We'd all love to be totally original in our work but let's be honest, we have to take our inspiration from somewhere. The key is to take those influences, blend them, and create something, exciting, different, and new. Even if it's lineage can be traced back. There's also the argument that giving a nod and a wink to your influences can enhance your work, and if done well a hidden reference here and there can actually provide extra value, particularly if a reader can feel somehow special when they get the in jokes and subtle references worked into your writing.
Discoredia is full of such references, words and phrases which will mean nothing to a horror fan may well be recognised by a fan of hardcore music as lyrics from certain songs or M.C's. The self same music fan would then possibly miss the more cinematic references, or the influences of other authors. It's a game I myself play when reading Stephen King novels, to spot the links to his other books such as the clown spotted in the storm drain in The Tommyknockers. Perhaps that's what influences my own fondness for putting such things into my own work, it probably is.
So, boiling it down, music, movies, and books. They've all played their part, along with my life expereinces, but I think I'll stick to those three sections here. It wouldn't be possible to cover every influence I've ever had, but hopefully those listed will give you an insight into those influences which have contributed toward inspiring my own writing, and maybe even introduce you to something new yourself.
